"Juvenile Justice"-An Intense K-Drama That May Make You Think Harder Than Usual

Image
I guess I've become a sucker for Korean legal drama of many kinds, right? I remembered how watching Kill It was pretty much a start followed up by Justice . Both dramas were eye candy filled with Jin A Nana. Later, I watched Pride and Prejudice , Suspicious Partner ,  Witch in Court , Partners for Justice ,   and Voice . I did enjoy the time travel of Tunnel and the insane action of Lawless Lawyer . Now, Top Ten in Netflix Philippines has Juvenile Justice --a fictional story that may make you question why juvenile justice happens in the first place. There's so many spoilers so if you haven't watched it--go watch it first! Judge Shim Yeo Seok (Kim Hye Soo) is a Miriam Defensor-Santiago type of character with her job. As a judge, I admire how she really means business especially in nailing down juvenile delinquents. Along with her is her subordinate Judge Cha Tae Joo (Kim Mu Yeol) whose actor also portrayed a detective in City of Evil . The two have conflicts along the way si...

When Kamen Rider Drive Gets Stuck In A Zombie Apocalypse

Image
I must admit that I hate it that Toei Ltd. could be trying to become even more "Japanese exclusive" - a move that might be detrimental to the company's future. In fact, I do get critical (at times) because not all change brings progress even if it's needed for progress. I was also a fan of Kamen Rider Drive while it's no secret that I found Shuriken Sentai Ninninger BORING. Ryoma Takeuchi got into a couple of projects after Drive such as Overprotected Kahako . Though, I decided to watch Love You as the World Ends which is a mix of several sources. It nearly reminds me of the Resident Evil franchise as a zombie virus hits. I wanted to watch All of Us are Dead but I decided to watch some Japanese shows for a change. I still feel Japanese have a stronger edge than South Koreans with TV drama. Though, Japan really should stop trying to make stuff "only for Japan". Good thing Netflix is showing Japanese shows though I wonder why Toei Ltd. hasn't allowed t...

Waiting For "Light The Night" Season 3 And My Thoughts On The Ongoing Series

Image
SpikyTV I would admit that I had no idea on what I wanted to write after the damage of the typhoon. Well, I'm practically a bit back now but it's not going to be easy. So far, I was able to to finally watch Light the Night which now had its two seasons both on a cliffhanger. I decided to binge-watch whenever I could which still led to another cliffhanger. One must ask, "Who killed Sue?" Cheryl Yang plays as Sue who was killed and she was among the 2000s Taiwanese actresses. Ruby Lin, who is in her 40s, (and still looking good even after being a mother of two) also stars as the head of the Japanese nightclub set in 1980s Taiwan and is set as the main character.  Watching it made me think about how Sue's death was probably motivated. What was the motive? Who killed her? There are some who believe that Rose (Ruby Lin) is the killer of Sue. Rose is the lead of the Japanese nightclub Hikari and a divorced mother. I was thinking about all the possible killers. It's ...

"Collectors" Is One Fun, Not-So-Special Adventure Film

Image
Granted, these days, I'm practically outdated with most American entertainment such as how I don't get surprised with how bad Disney is with its live-action remakes and the Star Wars Disney continuity. I still feel that Marvel under Disney ends up with mostly bad results. However, this film, Collectors , obviously borrows from popular culture material from American entertainment like Indiana Jones  (which is blatantly mentioned in the film) such as a character is called Dr. Jones (Joo Woo Jin).  Meanwhile, Kang Doo Hoo (Lee Je Hoon) seems to borrow inspiration from the Arsene Lupin series - a series that came from France, got a Japanese pseudo-sequel called Lupin III , inspired Lupinranger vs. Patranger , and probably this guy is partly inspired by the gentleman thief himself. The gentleman thief himself gets entangled with a romance (?) with the curator Yoon Se Hee (Shin Hye Sun) who is one smart lady. I'd admit I once found a girl who looks like Hye Sun pretty but later.....

Kamen Rider Revice: The Siblings That Fight Together, Stay Together

Image
I decided to do some binge-watching of the latest episodes of Kamen Rider Revice . One good reason why I haven't done episodes is because I'm also trying to watch some other shows on Netflix . Currently, I'm watching Light the Night (Taiwanese series) and I'm trying to enjoy the reality TV show New World which has South Korea celebrities on an island resort. I'll give another random drop thought on the idea of Revice - it turns out that the family that fights together, stays together! It's pretty much like how Fiveman , GoGoFive , and Magiranger were all sibling Super Sentai entries.  The first plot with the siblings is Daiji's jealousy of his older brother Ikki. Daiji produces an inner demon known as Kagero - born out of resentment for his older brother. Kagero was defeated allowing Ikki to transform into Live without a demon. The arc built on Daiji was talking about the power of the sibling bond. Ikki wasn't qualified at first but proved he too could f...

The Bewitching Legal Drama Of "Witch's Court"

Image
Nope, it's not a Halloween-themed show. Rather, it's about an antiheroine ace prosecutor named Ma Yi Deum (Jung Ryeo Won) who walks in the fine line between legal and illegal investigation. Along the way, she meets a prosecutor named Yeo Jin Wook (Yoon Hyun Min) who has child psychiatry as his pre-law course. The two are in contrast since one is an antiheroine while the other is a clean-cut lawyer. The two have a begrudging alliance that turns into romance - a romance that's barely there. Like most legal K-Dramas with romances - the romances don't dominate the scene as much as the investigation. What's interesting to know is the interwoven past between the couple-to-be. Jin Wook is looking for her mother who is missing for 20 years. Hyun Min's mother has a connection to Jin Wook's mother. I find the unraveling connections difficult to talk about without spoiling anything. Both the characters have a case to pursue. Though one's getting personal and the o...

"Zombie Detective" Is One Hilariously Good Scare

Image
Who says that horror elements always have to be in a scary series? Zombie Detective happens to have a good mix of comedy, horror, and action in many of the flicks It seems directors weren't too satisfied with giving Choi Jin Hyuk (currently on hiatus after he violated protocol) more sci-fi detective roles such as Rugal , Tunnel , and this one combines sci-fi with horror elements. You might find some references to pop culture such as the Resident Evil franchise with the zombies. The atmosphere may also feel similar to The Twins Effect where nightmare fuel meets comedy elements.  The story has a mysterious zombie who assumes the identity of Kim Moo Young (while spoilers, his real name is Kang Min Ho). Min Ho has no idea how he became a zombie and he was dumped. What Min Ho does is assume the identity of a very much-dead detective to figure out how he landed in the mess he's in. Along the way, he gets some unlikely help from Gong Sun Ji (Park Ju Hyun) who is a nosy woman. Sun Ji d...
