"Zombie Detective" Is One Hilariously Good Scare

Who says that horror elements always have to be in a scary series? Zombie Detective happens to have a good mix of comedy, horror, and action in many of the flicks It seems directors weren't too satisfied with giving Choi Jin Hyuk (currently on hiatus after he violated protocol) more sci-fi detective roles such as Rugal, Tunnel, and this one combines sci-fi with horror elements. You might find some references to pop culture such as the Resident Evil franchise with the zombies. The atmosphere may also feel similar to The Twins Effect where nightmare fuel meets comedy elements.

The story has a mysterious zombie who assumes the identity of Kim Moo Young (while spoilers, his real name is Kang Min Ho). Min Ho has no idea how he became a zombie and he was dumped. What Min Ho does is assume the identity of a very much-dead detective to figure out how he landed in the mess he's in. Along the way, he gets some unlikely help from Gong Sun Ji (Park Ju Hyun) who is a nosy woman. Sun Ji discovers Min Ho's secret as a zombie and tries to get him to figure out his past.

It's entertaining to see how Min Ho tries to readjust to society as an undead. Minor spoilers - a certain someone was creating some deadly virus that would convert humans into zombies. Min Ho ends up eating raw stuff to survive and frequently uses some skin conditioner to blend in. It's also impled that Sun Ji and Min Ho do have feelings for each other - something close to necrophilia if Min Ho has truly died before becoming a zombie.

There are various allies in the show as criminals are hunted. There's unlikely help from Lee Sung Rok (Tae Hang Ho) and Wang Wei (Lee Jong Ok) who act like Bulk and Skull in Mighty Morphin'. However, the comedic duo proves more useful to the plot and helping the heroes. Sun Ji has her family who has a hard time believing in the existence of zombies. The Gangrim Police Station is involved in hunting weird criminals such as a bizarre cult leader, the true killer from years ago, and the person who made a deadly virus that allowed zombies to rise - all spoiler territory!

The show doesn't shy away from nightmare fuel too. Some scenes do get brilliantly mixed like in a crime drama - since this IS also a crime drama. Though, the nightmare fuel is easily forgotten because of the action and comedy scenes. This was also ironically shown last year during the peak of COVID-19 when some crazy anti-vaxxers said that vaccines will zombify people. The show itself can be a good scare and a good laugh at the same time.
