The Bewitching Legal Drama Of "Witch's Court"

Nope, it's not a Halloween-themed show. Rather, it's about an antiheroine ace prosecutor named Ma Yi Deum (Jung Ryeo Won) who walks in the fine line between legal and illegal investigation. Along the way, she meets a prosecutor named Yeo Jin Wook (Yoon Hyun Min) who has child psychiatry as his pre-law course. The two are in contrast since one is an antiheroine while the other is a clean-cut lawyer. The two have a begrudging alliance that turns into romance - a romance that's barely there. Like most legal K-Dramas with romances - the romances don't dominate the scene as much as the investigation.

What's interesting to know is the interwoven past between the couple-to-be. Jin Wook is looking for her mother who is missing for 20 years. Hyun Min's mother has a connection to Jin Wook's mother. I find the unraveling connections difficult to talk about without spoiling anything. Both the characters have a case to pursue. Though one's getting personal and the other is more focused on justice. Jin Wook's motives are getting personal - something Hyun Min is afraid could destroy her.

The dangerous world of dirty politics

Dramabeans

Meanwhile, some dirty politics play into the picture as Jo Sap Goo (Jung Kwang Ryul) is pretty much the cunning main antagonist. Sap Go will do anything for power - even sacrifice others. Some people die young all thanks to Sap Go's cruel activities. He is a self-righteous person who will do anything to implement his own version of justice. I think of him as a villain who knows how to play his cards and falls down with his arrogance. The actor really knows how to make such a mean guy come alive. I wanted to strangle Sap Goo EVERY TIME he makes his move. The fact he has hidden his sexual torture case some time ago with his influence is something. A lack of evidence is because he destroys them.

What truly made it even more entertaining is to see some criminals get into the picture. Some of them are dirty hired thugs that hide behind Sap Goo himself. Just think of Sap Goo as Louis Strack Jr. and Baek Sang Ho as Robert G. Durant. Durant only served Strack out of self-interest for his own gang's power. Though, unlike Strack, I felt that Sap Goo has been more interesting as he actually interacts with the protagonists as a direct antagonist even more. Sang Ho becomes more interesting though since he has his own self-interests too.

The verdict for me is another good series. I may not find the buildup as good as Justice or the characters as good as Pride and Prejudice. Though, it's interesting to see how a female antiheroine plays the cards. It's still worth a watch. Just think of it as a not-so-delicious food item that you should still try even when there's other more delicious food items. Though, you might have a different preference than mine.
