"Love In The Clouds" Is A Supernatural Hua Mulan Story (With An Aladdin Twist)
Is it me or do I just enjoy beating up Disney live-action remakes? If The Female General was actually one Hua Mulan inspired story, then so is Love in the Clouds. However, Love in the Clouds reminds me of how Disney's Mulan (2020) remake was basically a Mary Sue. However, Love in the Clouds is a slow build a classic switcheroo (where a mother swaps places with a child that's not hers) for her own convenience. Empress Ce (Zhang Ting) executes the perfect switcheroo. In fact, things aren't like what they are supposed to be.
The main heroine Ming Yi (Lu Yu Xiao) poses as the Prince Ming Xian. It's pretty much Hua Mulan except it's not in the army. The big issue is with the tournament of the six realms. Think Mortal Kombat without the violent "Fatalities!" Ji Bozai (Hou Ming Hao) has a dark secret past, where he is the Aladdin. Ji Bozai is the diamond in the rough as he grew up in the Jixing Abyss. Bozai later discovers some dark secrets and decides, "What makes up a family?"
The main antagonist is Situ Ling (Yu Cheng En). Ling is pretty much the tragic villain who becomes Pure Evil. It's a progression. Ling could be compared to Jafar from Aladdin (but he's much younger) or Adolf Hitler. He's practically a Nobody to Nightmare. Ling is the cliche of the villain who has a crush on the heroine. Talk about Mulan having to deal with a villainous suitor -- all the while Aladdin and not Shang is the main interest. Interestingly, Aladdin's earlier versions took place in China but the geographic descriptions didn't match China. That's why Aladdin kept getting modified to fit the Middle Eastern setting.
This was probably what I'd call, "Giving the Xianxia feel that the 1980s to 1990s never had." It's because this was a very CGI heavy world that it's difficult to mistake it old Chinese TV series of the past.
