I could remember a couple of love story x legal thriller Korean dramas I've watched. These series were Kill It, Justice, Pride and Prejudice, Suspicious Partner, and now this one called Lawless Lawyer which was shown in South Korea in 2018. Who says a love story can't take different twists? I couldn't decide between a Korean legal drama without a romance vs. one with a romance. I decided to pick this one instead of trying to watch The Good Detective. The story involves thinking outside the box and that some of your worst enemies may not be what they seem.
The story involves Atty. Bong Sang Pil (Lee Joon Gi) is in an awkward relationship with a hot-blooded prosecutor Ha Jae Yi (Seo Ye Ji). Jae Yi gets suspended for punching a corrupt judge and admires Judge Cha Moon Sook (Lee Hye Hyong) who looks incorruptible. Some tragedies manage to bring them together. Sang Pil knows something that Jae Yi doesn't. I think Jae Yi's toughness may remind a Toku fan of Tsurihime in Kakuranger - she even looks somewhat like her!
However, Judge Cha turns out that she's anything but incorruptible. Judge Cha has a public facade as a good person but she's really the main antagonist of the series. I'm amazed at how Hye Hyong can do both parts - a character who is benevolent but isn't. Hye Hyong manages to convince you (at first) that her character is honorable then she does a good job showing she isn't honorable. I'd say that Hye Hyong can steal the show anytime she appears. Added to it is Ahn Oh Joo (Choi Min Soo) who is a corrupt businessman who plans to build his own metropolis. To do so, Oh Joo teams up with Hye Hyong. Both appear to be decent but they are really crooks.
One thing in legal thrillers is the element of surprise can be reserved for the audience first before the fictional netizens The villains are very real and they know how to play their cards. Meanwhile, Sang Pil plays the anti-hero who wants to expose the corrupt system that started the whole series in a fictional city known as Ki Sung. So far, I'm enjoying it and it can give me a better thrill than still watching the still ongoing misadventures of Cardo Dalisay in Ang Probinsyano.
