Throwback: Do You Remember The Song "Can't Lose You" By F4?

I can remember how I thought F4 was a Japanese boy band until I heard their song "Can't Lose You". It was in Mandarin and perhaps the first Chinese song that got me interested in listening to Chinese music. Back then, I didn't care too much until F4 came. It was Meteor Garden that got me into Chinese entertainment. It was their trademark song "Can't Lose You" (which was used in Meteor Garden Season II).

Now, here's what I'd call a loose translation I found online:

(Jerry)
Without you, who am I?
Wherever my heart stops it doesn't seem right

(Vic)
On which day? Whereabouts can we carry on the unfinished love
At the cross roads, who is beside you?

(Ken)
Even if the world denies you
It won't make me give you up

(Vanness)
Even if our past has nothing to prove it

(Vanness & Ken)
I will stay by you

(All)
Oh Baby baby baby, my baby baby
I definitely can't lose you.
Your hand your voice still taking up my heart
How can I forget thinking about you is like breathing?
Oh Baby baby, my baby baby
I definitely can't lose you
Don't care where you are
I definitely will be able to find you

(Jerry)
One day there will be a day using meteor rain to prove our promises

(Vic)
You will find out forever isn't far

(Vanness)
Even if the whole world denies you
It can't make me give you up

(Vanness & Ken)
Even if our past has nothing to prove it
I will stay by you

(All) Oh Baby baby baby, My Baby baby
I definitely can't lose you
Your hand your voice still taking up my heart
How can I forget thinking about you is like breathing?
Oh baby baby, my baby baby
I definitely can't lose you
Don't care where you are
I will be able to find you

I still remember the time this song played and some of my Filipino friends actually liked it. I kind of wanted to raise an eyebrow right now thinking about Filipinos who enjoy a song they can't understand without finding out about the lyrics. But the digital age was just beginning and some of them started finding English translations. Some of them wanted to take Mandarin instead of Nihonggo classes back then. But their craze did shift eventually to Korean music.

The song itself really addresses the theme of Meteor Garden II. Shan Tsai herself becomes a wild grass turned into a spineless porcupine. Daoming Si loses his memory and starts to relive life all over again. It was the dragging story that sort of made me not want to rewatch Meteor Garden II. The whole theme of "I just can't lose you." is highlighted throughout its 31 episodes. They had the Chin Han x Leanne Liu chemistry if you ask me.

Exploring new stuff is fun but some old school stuff have just aged well. This song is among them!
